Grilled Garlic Asparagus

Grilled Garlic AsparagusIt’s time to fire up the grill!  These grilled spears of fresh asparagus are proof that sometimes the simplest ingredients make the best dishes! Grilled Garlic Asparagus is gluten free, paleo, low carb, vegetarian and incredibly easy.

Growing up, I hated asparagus!  My mother and aunts would eat asparagus straight out of the can – gross!  I always thought that asparagus was a mushy, sour side dish that no one actually enjoyed.  That was until my Hubby made his version of Grilled Garlic Asparagus for the first time!  When you grill asparagus, there is still a bit of a snap to the spear, which increases the overall eating experience.

The garlicy, smoky flavor and charred edges are the best part!

Grilled asparagus has now become a staple in our house!

Grilling Asparagus

We prefer to grab thicker spears for grilling to save them from falling through the grates. However, sometimes when that option isn’t available, there are other ways to grill your asparagus with success.

  • Use a sheet of foil to grill on.Grilled Garlic Asparagus 2
  • Grab a grill pan.
  • Use a grilling basket.
  • Skewer 4-5 spears together, side-by-side.

If you’re grilling with other meats, make sure to finish all of your meats/seafood first before starting on your asparagus as they cook fast.

How long they take depends on thickness. Usually, you can cook them for about 2 minutes, or until nicely marked or charred with grill marks. Flip and continue grilling for another 2-3 minutes until fork-tender.

Tips:

When buying asparagus, look for firm, straight, uniform-size spears. The tips should be closed and dry.

In order to keep asparagus fresh longer, place the cut stems in a container of cold water—similar to flowers in a vase. Place container in the refrigerator, changing the water at least once every 2 days.

Place your asparagus perpendicular to the grates of your grill to prevent any from falling through.  You can also use a grill basket, if you have one.
